Tell me about a time you led a design or refactor that improved reliability or latency for a production system at scale—what tradeoffs did you make, how did you validate the impact, and what would you do differently now?

Amazon works backward from customer needs: describe a time you translated ambiguous customer or business requirements into a technical plan and metrics, then rallied engineers to deliver—what was the outcome and how did you measure success?

A senior engineer at Amazon often owns service behavior and operational excellence: walk through how you would design an API for a high-traffic feature (rate limiting, idempotency, retries, timeouts, and graceful degradation) and what failure modes you would explicitly plan for.

“Write code that works” is necessary, but “raise the bar” matters—tell me about a time you found a quality gap (testing, observability, security, performance, or maintainability) in a team’s practices, how you influenced change, and how you ensured adoption.
